Radiation Cell Phone: Trigger Brain Cancer

Besides the issue of E-coli epidemic in mainland Europe, the world is also shocked by an unpleasant news. Recently the World Health Organization (WHO) released a statement that cell phone can result in brain cancer. Radiation emitted by mobile phones contain carcinogenic elements. As known, a carcinogen is a substance that can trigger cancer.

Indeed, various studies have said that cell phones have adverse effects for health. Research on the phone has actually done a few years ago. A study from Sweden (European Journal of Cancer Prevention), published in 2002, suggested that the use of analog cell phones can cause brain cancer. The longer the time of cell phone use, the greater the risk of brain cancer.

Still from the same country, the research conducted at a university in Sweden resulted in the discovery about the effect of mobile phone radiation on the function of enzymes and proteins. To minimize the possibility of brain cancer, there is need for preventive efforts. That effort could begin by changing habits in the use of the phone. Changing habits toward better bring positive effects for health. These efforts include:
1. Maximizing the distance from the radiation source. It means head avoiding the phone as much as possible.
2. Minimizing the time the conversation. If the conversation for a long time, use the loudspeaker or handsfree facility.
3. Utilize the facility SMS (Short Message Services)
4. If the SMS and the loudspeaker is less effective, arrange a time to meet with people who want to be invited to talk.
5. Installing anti-radiation equipment on a mobile phone to reduce radiation levels.
6. Avoiding the phone when the signal is weak due to radiation is stronger.
7. Keep children away from cell phones because the skull and scalp in children is thinner so that the radiation is easy to enter.
8. Drinking milk because milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid which can reduce complaints due to cell phone radiation.

In fact, cell phones can disturb health. Mobile phones have a strong wave. In addition to radiation, cell phone noise level can be a trigger ear damage. The impact noise is ear pain. Therefore, once again the right solution is to reduce the intensity of the use of mobile phones in the ear.


Green Campus: Evocative Awareness of Academics To the Environment

Today, the issue of environmental damage towards the climax. The crisis of the green area so much the evident in front of the eye. The number of skyscrapers in urban and changing of land for office buildings, shop, and the block of house reduces the quantity of green area. Parks and comfortable shelter increasingly difficult to find. Rice fields became narrower.

Awareness of the importance of the environment is still underestimated by some people. The phenomenon of the above should get serious attention from various parties, especially the university as a producer scholars, humans who are educated. Universities should interpret this discourse well. Real action and fast at least needs to be realized. The university should respond this issues through green action, conservation programs, or other program which give benefit to the environment.

Why should be done by the university? First, the university as a pillar of the implementation of an education. Level of high education at university level. Second, education is still regarded as a strategic agency that teaches the concepts and sciences, including environmental. On the shoulders of education, the concepts/ideas about the environment can be learned and plunged so that the issue of environmental damage can be conquered immediately. Third, as mentioned in advance that the output of higher education in the form of educated people/scholars who participate in the worldwide development and contribute in policymaking one day.

Unfortunately, the university seemed oblivious. Most universities compete to pursue the reputation of the institution. Even some university intends to go international, pursue the title of world class university, become an excellent university that able to compete with foreign universities. Indeed, it is not wrong. On the other side, there are many universities that attract as many as possible students. Together with increasing of students quantity, the needs of students also increase while capacity has exceeded quota limits. That is, reluctantly the university must provide additional facilities in the form of building classes, practices places, and laboratories. This is certainly an impact on the construction of buildings that would destroy the environment later.

Campus as a place to produce candidates for intellectuals should also promote green programs, programs oriented environment. Proper awareness of the environment is built to cope with environmental degradation. Construction of campus facilities should be accompanied by the construction of a park or planting shade trees. Thus, the issue of environmental damage can be conquered properly by academics.


Epidemic of E-Coli in Mainland Europe

Recently the world shocked by the health issues that come from European mainland. Tens of people died because infected epidemic of E-coli (Escherichia coli). Most victims come from Germany. Several other countries in Europe are also infected with E-coli epidemic such as England, Spain, Denmark, France, Sweden and Netherlands. Even the epidemic has spread to the United States.

Initially cucumber, tomato, and lettuce from Spain suspected as the source of the spread of E-coli. However, now there are new findings that mentions German’s local vegetables as the main medium for spreading E-coli epidemic. This allegation is aimed at bean sprouts.

Really, E-coli is a bacteria inside the human body. The nature of these bacteria are not harmful. In fact, these bacteria have a number of benefits. Together with other bacteria in the colon, E. coli produces amino acids that are beneficial to the body. In addition, E-coli can protect humans intestinal from infectious of bacterial pathogens and produce antibiotic materials.

At other times, E-coli can not friendly with humans. E-coli began to attack humans. This is due to excessive in use of antibiotics by humans. In this phase, the immune system began to fail in the gut. The germs enter through the gut easily. Therefore, the use of antibiotics must be precise. Besides in the intestine, E-coli live in the surrounding environment such as shallow groundwater that has been contaminated.

However, variants of E-coli on the blue continent (the nickname for the continent of Europe) is different from E-coli in general. The bacteria is believed to be dangerous and deadly because can kill humans. The new variant is resistant to antibiotics. There are two cases in E-coli epidemic that is Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia Coli (EHEC) and Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS). EHEC cases is milder than HUS. While HUS is the development of EHEC, the next phase after EHEC.

The symptoms arising from EHEC attacks, among others, have indigestion in the stomach like diarrhoea. Sometimes abdominal gets cramp. These symptoms are accompanied by fever and vomiting. In some cases, the feces mixed with blood. EHEC incubation period ranges from 3 to 8 days, with the average 4 days. Most people with EHEC can be recovered after the eighth day with intensive care. In special circumstances, EHEC can be increased to HUS.

Signs of HUS include anemia, thrombocytopenia, acute renal failure, blindness, paralysis, and coma. To ascertain patients infected HUS (positive) so required the laboratory tests. To be aware of E-coli epidemic, need to be kept clean of food, beverages, vegetables, and fruits. However that may be, maintaining food hygiene is anticipative step to E-coli bacteria.
